Different Diseases Related to Menstruation

Menstruation is a common experience for women, yet it's not always an openly spoken subject. As a result, many women are unaware of what constitutes normal and abnormal cycle behaviour.

If you're experiencing abnormalities in your menstrual cycle, it could be because of one of your menstrual disorders, which are usually complications related to your normal menstrual cycle.

These disorders can impact your ability to conceive a baby, daily life with cramps, mood swings, and much more. Hence, you should know about such ailments, and to help you, Antenate has brought this informative guide. This article will explain to you some of the most common menstrual diseases.

How Do Disorders Hinder Your Menstrual Cycle Work?

A period is a part of your menstrual cycle. During the period, a string of changes occurs to your body parts like ovaries, uterus, vagina and breasts every 28 days, on moderate. Sometimes regular menstrual cycles might get a bit longer or shorter. The standard menstrual period stays near five to seven days.

Some women pass through their periods without any trouble with less or no worries, while others encounter severe circumstances. Menstrual ailments are disruptive physical and emotional signs that can occur before or during your menstruation, like heavy bleeding, irregular periods and uncontrollable mood swings.

Some Common Menstrual Diseases

Hurtful Cramps or Dysmenorrhoea

Every woman experiences some cramping during the period. But intense and frequent cramps might be symptoms of dysmenorrhoea. This condition happens because of abnormal contractions in your uterus during the menses.

You might usually feel pain in the lower abdomen, which can circulate to the lower back and thighs. We can classify dysmenorrhea as primary or secondary. Primary dysmenorrhoea signifies cramping hurt due to menstruation.

Secondary dysmenorrhoea is pain that relates to endometriosis, pelvic illnesses, uterine fibroids or any other disorder.

Heavy Bleeding or Menorrhagia

Period blood volume differs in each woman. If you go through one or more pads or tampons per three hours, you may have menorrhagia. Often, this condition appears in most women.

Heavy bleeding can occur due to uterine fibroids, pregnancy problems like miscarriage,  ectopic pregnancy, cancer, hormonal imbalance, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

Missed Period or Amenorrhoea

Amenorrhoea condition leads to the absence of period. Amenorrhoea also has two types, primary and secondary. In primary amenorrhoea, a girl does not menstruate even after aged 16. And secondary amenorrhea is a condition when your periods were regular earlier but now are not arrived for at least 3-4 months. It can happen because of obesity, extreme exercise, or any eating disorder.

Oligomenorrhea or Irregular Periods

The moderate menstrual process stays for 28 days. Oligomenorrhea is a disease when your cycle extends. It is known as oligomenorrhea if you don’t get your period for 35 days or more and have only four to nine periods per year. This ailment occurs in women in their reproductive years and because of excessive weight and stress.

Light Periods or Hypomenorrhea

Hypomenorrhea condition is the opposite of Menorrhagia. In hypomenorrhea, women get a period that stays less than two days and has decreased blood discharge.

This ailment might happen because of hormone imbalance, tension, or pregnancy. Also, having low body weight and early ovarian failure are two more possible causes of hypomenorrhea.

While this disorder can emerge at any phase of a woman’s life, it appears to ensue more often before menopause and after adolescence age.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Your menstrual cycle also might get affected due to sexually transmitted diseases. If infections like gonorrhoea or chlamydia are not cured, the pathogen will enter the reproductive system through the bloodstream, inflame your reproductive organs like the uterus and cause irregular bleeding.

Cancer

The abnormal development of the tissue in your uterus can lead to intense pain, unusual bleeding and extra heavy spotting in one month. The woman experiences a more water and prolonged bleeding phase, influencing the uterus to place an embryo.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

In this disease, the ovaries release a developed egg that, in the absence of fertilisation, develops into a tiny cyst and releases androgens.

Inappropriate levels of androgen contribute to irregular periods, acne, weight gain, and other PCOS signs, as well as issues with the menstrual cycle.

If you are encountering any changes in your bleeding frequency and amount, consult with a gynaecologist promptly.

How to Treat Menstrual Disorders?

Treatments of menstrual disorders depend on your health, medical record, age, disorder severity, symptoms, and the reasons for the disease.

Multiple options are available like changes in dietary, oral contraceptive pills, hormonal supplements, antidepressants, regular workouts, prostaglandin inhibitors, & surgery. Thus, it is vital for you first visit your healthcare provider to diagnose the issue and create a treatment plan.
